Coaches Confirmed 2018/19:
Boys Lee McCarthy Justas Bražas Chris Bart-Williams Darko Stojkovic Ben Geddes Radu Dade Girls Peter Jenner Back from the Christmas break the league leading side faced Herts Warriors a little less fit than they had been before the holidays. This initial rust was shown in the first quarter where Hornets led by only 1 point.
However once the team seemed to warm up and get used to playing again they started to show their dominance once more. This lead to a very convincing second and third quarter offensively. With a strong influence on the boards giving the side great opportunities for second chance points Hornets created a significant lead. The teams strong defence also shone through despite the possible lack of fitness. The team’s chemistry was too much for Herts Warriors to deal with. Great ball movement to give the big men easy scores was seen throughout the game. Sam Nicholson showed great aggression starting in the point guard spot scoring 14 points. Ashton ‘splash’ Linney showed the holidays hadn’t changed his shooting form as he continued to score 3’s along with his 12 rebounds earning him a double-double. Andy also joined Ashton in a double-double along with 26 points making him top scorer. After a bumpy start to the New Year, the girls found their mojo again on Saturday in a thrilling match vs. Oaklands.
Two focused training sessions the week before set the team up with confident, aggressive new plays and strong defence. First to score, Hornets then matched Oaklands score for score and drew them to team fouls in several quarters. The Hornets teamwork and positioning was impressive and Oaklands failed to close down an on-fire Kiylo who clocked up an impressive 28 points. Work still needed on conversion of our free throws and maximising rebound opportunities, we lost out on points that could have easily given us the win. The strong Oaklands side took the lead at the end of the third quarter and despite a big push from Hornets finished the match on top. Summing things up, Coach Jenner added “Fantastic game yesterday, a wonderful team effort, everyone worked really hard and particularly the two Mollies who were not feeling well”. Great to see our girls looking and feeling like winners again, celebrating their performance after the match with a song and dance in the changing rooms! All set to meet Herts Warriors at home this Sunday. Top Scorers: Kiylo Solgabade 28, Ella Messetter 11, Morgan Davis 6. |
