Bucks Hornets U14’s maintained their 100% winning start to the season with a 77-31 victory at home to Cambridge Cats.

The focus in training in the week leading up to the game had been defence and the Hornets certainly delivered on court with an unusually vocal and much more effective defensive performance.  This was reflected in the 19 steals/interceptions and 8 deflections.

The Hornets were ahead 23-8 at the end of the first quarter and only conceded 2pts in the second quarter to reach half time 50-10 up. The 3rd quarter followed the same pattern as the first 2, with the Hornets winning it 19-5 to enter the final quarter 69-15 ahead.  Although the whole squad had made a contribution by this stage, the match position provided the ideal opportunity in the 4th quarter to give some of the squad members more substantial court time.  Despite only having 8 players and the game situation, the Cats put up a spirited fight in the final quarter to win it 16-8, but the Hornets comfortably running out 77-31 winners.

The pleasing aspects of the game were the much improved defensive performance, the fact that everyone managed to get useful court time and that 10 out of the 12 match day squad managed to score points.

Coach Lee McCarthy said, “I was really happy that I was able to give everyone significant minutes today.  Daniel K scored his first two points in two seasons and the bench lifted with a roar.  We also worked on some things defensively this week at practice and so we were able to apply more pressure at that end of the floor.  We are still making progress which is really good, and there is so much potential in this squad.”

Leading scorers were Bradley 27pts, Jaden 10pts and Robert 9pts.

The U14’s have a weekend off next week, before resuming on 29th November with a tricky away game against Hertfordshire Warriors.
